James “Jimmy” E. McCartney Jr., 54, of Springfield passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015, at his home with family and friends by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He now is joined in glory with his dear family that he loved so much, Grandpa Tom, Grandma Mary, Grandpa and Grandma McCartney, Vicki, Richard and Janice. He was born May 24, 1961, in Wood County, Ohio to James and Judy McCartney, Sr. of Grand Rapids, Ohio. James retired in 2010 from the Air Force National Guard and civil service after 28 years. Jimmy served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Provide Comfort Turkey and Afghanistan. He also served 2 years in Iceland. His family is very proud of his service and enjoyed working on the air crafts. He was a member of the New Covenant Baptist Church. Jimmy was involved, in High school sports and a 1979 graduate of Otsego High School in Tontogany, Ohio. He loved Ohio State Buckeyes, hunting and NASCAR, but most of all he loved his country. Jimmy is survived by his parents and loving and devoted wife and soul mate, Kathy McCartney, whom he married August 3, 1991. Together they raised a daughter, Jennifer (John) Haendel of Nashville, TN, a son, Michael (Jessica) McPherson of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by a brother, Donald (Beth) McCartney in Washington, a sister, Sally (Phil) Cavanaugh in Custar, Ohio, three grand-gals Gabriela, Olivia, and Amelia, two grand-fellas Charles and Samuel, two step grand-sons Logan and Austin, he also has a new grand-fella to arrive in December. A niece Stacy (Adam) Lamners with 8 great nieces and nephews and a nephew Jayson (Kim) Cavanaugh with 4 great nieces and nephew, His sweet Nieces Loriann and Ginny. He also enjoyed hanging out with his friends Gary and Rachelle, Holby and Shannon. Through out his battle with head and neck cancer he always had a smile on his face. He had many great people taking care of him at OSU James Cancer Center whom he was thankful for. He always had devoted wife by his side taking good care of him and his every need. In the end he was also thankful for the loving care that was given to him by his Sister Sally and his friends Suzanne, Bill and Angel all from Virginia. The family is very thankful for The Hospice of the Miami Valley for all their loving care they gave to Jimmy in his last few days. A memorial service with full military honors will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, October 3, 2015, at New Covenant Baptist Church, 455 E. Main St., Enon, with Pastor Ron Lee officiating. There will also be a few people that would like sing some songs and share some memorys. Adkins Funeral Home of Enon is assisting James’s family with his final wishes.
