Margaret Hoyt

Margaret Jeanne (Locker) Hoyt, known to all as Peg, passed away peacefully in her home on February 29, 2016, following a decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Peg was born on August 21, 1947, in Carlisle, Penn., home of the mighty Jim Thorpe. Her father, Bernard Locker, was an Air Force man, which meant the family moved around a bit before settling in Dayton, Ohio. Peg attended Wayne High School and went on to graduate from Ohio State University. At OSU, she met her first husband, Richard Rhodes, and from that union came her two sons, Matt and Jason. Peg glided through this world as an indomitable and selfless spirit, always putting others ahead of herself. Peg worked tirelessly as a social worker and administrator for various agencies in Coldwater, Ohio, and Greene and Clark counties, supporting mental health and addiction programs. In her forties, she locked herself in her office in the evenings for long study sessions, culminating in a master’s degree from Wright State University. Peg got things done. In the early 1990s, under the thick influence of Yellow Springs, she espoused the Grateful Dead and peace marches, much to the alarm of her sons, who were trying very hard to be cool. But the fact was and is: Peg was very cool. And what kid doesn’t want a born-again hippie mom? Out of Peg’s love of music sprang new love, as she met musician George “Skip” Hoyt at a gig. It was all made honest by their marriage on July 23, 2000, in Enon, Ohio. Peg adored the ocean, sojourning to tropical destinations with Skip and friends often. In midlife, she took up walking, which became her calling card as she beat miles-long paths through Enon and Yellow Springs. Locals of a certain vintage may fondly recall her walking-based public TV segment, “Rhodes on the Road.” Peg is survived by her husband, George “Skip” Hoyt; her sons, Matt and Jason Rhodes; her sister, Kit Espinosa; her stepchildren, Tony Hoyt and Jennifer Schneider; her granddaughter, Lilly Schneider; and her lovable pup, Garcia. A service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in Adkins Funeral Home, 7055 Dayton Road, Enon, Ohio.
