Herbert B. Arnold Jr.

Herbert B. Arnold Jr. started life in Johnson City, Tennessee (June 29, 1936) with dad, Herbert B. Arnold Sr. and mom, Glenna Day Arnold. Both parents are deceased as well as his sister Lola. The Arnolds moved to Ohio when Herb was six months old, and Herb started school in Beavertown. When his folks moved to Dayton, he thought he was destined for Fairmont HS, but his dad bought the old Maupin’s market in Brandt and started Arnold’s Market. Herb reluctantly attended Bethel High School – was a major basketball star and caught baseball, a charmer but not a stellar student. School got a whole lot more interesting when as a junior he was asked to a Sade Hawkins dance (sponsored by GAA) by a freshman named Barbara Studebaker (she forgot to ask her parents’ permission first. Oops!). Now 59 years later, Barbara remembers 4 junior/senior proms, two years at Wittenberg where his Corvette drew lots of attention, marriage in 1959, followed by 3 children, and life went on. Herb became a journeyman meat cutter and ran the markets in Brandt as well as Medway and spent several years selling quality furniture. His hobbies were playing golf, golf, and more golf with school buddy Bill Vaughan and Mel Poff and also creating beautiful handcrafted furniture. After 50 years of standing on his feet, Uncle Arthur (itus) made walking a pain (literally) and although he tried several ways to help, he found his cat Hootie, the couch and the TV his favorites. Herb is survived by his wife, Barb, and 3 children. The oldest, Mark (who followed his dad and is a meat cutter) has a daughter April married to Rob Daubenspeck. Mark is married to Kathy Bartruff and also claims Sara and Brian Whitaker who have provided him with 2 great grandchildren – Colton and Allie and Kathy’s other son David. Daughter Micque (along with husband Chuck Brickson works at Walnut Ridge Senior Living) and lives in West Des Moines, Iowa. They have two children Geena married to Dane Hopwood and Brad married to Rachel Ewing. Youngest Matt (Mathematician and Systems Engineer) is married to Katrina Ramsey (Outdoor Education Program Manager for MetroParks). They boast two cats. His nephew Michael Doherty, his son Jason, and grandniece Shelley Price are his only remaining family Herb will be missed for lots of reasons, but we’ll think of him when we pass a golf course or eat a fine steak. Per his request, no services are planned. A family gathering will take place at a later date. Adkins Funeral Home will take good care of him, and I/we can sit on his granite bench and visit anytime at the Enon Cemetery.
